At Heber-Overgaard Unified School District, we are committed to supporting the educational success and well-being of all students, including those facing homelessness. We understand the unique challenges that homeless students and their families encounter, and we are here to help ensure that every student has access to the resources and support they need.

Understanding Homelessness: The McKinney-Vento Act

The McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act is a federal law that protects the educational rights of children and youth experiencing homelessness. Under this act, students who lack a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence are entitled to specific rights and services.

Who Qualifies as Homeless?

Children and youth who are:

  • living in shelters, motels, or campgrounds;
  • sharing housing with others due to economic hardship;
  • living in cars, parks, or other public spaces; and/or
  • unaccompanied youth (not in the physical custody of a parent or guardian).
